Sword of the Stranger (Japanese: ストレンヂア 無皇刃譚 Hepburn: Sutorenjia Mukōhadan?, Stranja Mukōhadan) is a 2007 Japanese anime film directed by Masahiro Andō and also created by computer animation studio Bones. The film follows Kotaro, a young boy that is hunted by a team of swordsmen from Ming Dynasty China for mystical factors. Among the group is a fearful Western boxer named Luo-Lang, whose only desire is to locate a worthy opponent. Kotaro and his pet dog fulfill "Nanashi", a mysterious ronin who is haunted by memories of his past which have led him to stay clear of drawing his sword ever once again. When the Ming encounter a Sengoku-era feudal lord, a happy general, and monks torn in between confidence and survival, the reason behind the Ming team's quest tests the bond between Kotaro and Nanashi.
Set during the Sengoku-era in Japan, a young child named Kotarou flees from strange pursuers with his canine, Tobimaru, and also a monk, Shouan. Shouan informs the boy to look for assistance from Zekkai at the Mangaku temple in Akaike, handing him a gem in case he needs money. Keeping that, Kotarou takes off as the temple he was remaining at burns to the ground.
Quickly after, in the province of Akaike, a group of Ming immigrants under the command of the elderly Lord Byakuran are accompanied by Akaike intermediaries through a hill passage. They are ambushed by bandits, yet are slaughtered by the Ming's expert swordsman, Rarou.
Kotarou and also Tobimaru make their method throughout the land, briefly hiding out in a rundown temple in the hills. In the temple, they encounter Nanashi, a roaming swordsman whose sword is bound to its sheath. As Kotarou cooks a dish, smoke from his wet fire wood alerts his pursuers, that turn out to be a Ming foreigner with Akaike soldiers. Nanashi, inadvertently obtains involved and in the taking place fight, has the ability to eliminate the males, yet Tobimaru is struck by a venomous blade. Nanashi begins to stray again but Kotarou offers his gem, worth 10 Ryō for Nanashi to conserve Tobimaru's life and take them to their location.
